The US Marine Corps Infantry

Within the United States Marine Corp, there are two Infantry schools located in both the East and Western parts of the United States. Called the School of Infantry (SOI), the eastern location can be found at Camp Geiger, and SOI West is located at Camp Pendleton and these two schools are home to the second part of military training after recruit training. Marines that receive training at MCRD Parris Island go on to receive Infantry training at Camp Geiger, while Marines from MCRD San Diego go on to Camp Pendleton.

While at the School of Infantry, Marines with a Military Occupational Specialty or MOS, in the Infantry field are trained at the Infantry Training Battalion (ITB). All other Marines receive their training in the basic infantry skills at the Marine Combat Training Battalion (MCT Bn). Going through the School of Infantry takes entry-level Marines and gives them enough training to become combat ready.

In the Infantry Training Battalion, or ITB, Marines that have come out of Boot Camp are given a 59-day training course that provides teaching to Marines to learn how to deal with combat situations. During this training, Marines learn:

• Combat Marksmanship
• Improvised Explosive Devices
• Military Operations in Urban Terrain
• Combat Formations
• Convoy Operations
• Land Navigation and Patrolling

Aside from training in Infantry, Marines also receive training for their MOS. Physical conditioning is also a part of training, and a combination of all these skills are what makes the Marine stand out among others.

As with any skills or education that is gained while in the military, they are also valuable out in the civilian world. Many jobs can be found in law enforcement with training in Infantry, as well as a variety of careers that implement knowledge learned with MOS training.
